The Fourth of July is just around the corner and the holiday is a celebration of so many things that compose our national identity. At its core, the Fourth is a celebration of our freedom, the Declaration of Independence and the Founding Fathers.

Twenty-seventeen has already been a record year for Chicago tech and proof we are more self-sustaining than ever. In the spirit of the holiday, therefore, we thought it fitting to celebrate our own ecosystem’s identity in theme. And who better to celebrate our flourishing autonomy than our founding leaders? We approached these Second City tech founders with a simple inquiry that incorporates what is perhaps our country’s most famous phrase, “what truths do you hold self-evident?”

..

At Solstice, we hold these truths to be self-evident, that Chicago is one of the greatest technology cities in the world, that every company will eventually need to become a technology company at its core, and that Solstice was built from the ground up; with Chicago values, a Chicago work ethic, and a Chicago perseverance, to help all willing Chicago businesses with this inevitable and historical transformation.

At Narrative Science, we hold these truths to be self-evident, that the power of transparency and inclusiveness in an organization is transformative. Continuing to reinforce our vision, sharing performance metrics (and financial results) across our business, and even explaining the reasoning behind tough decisions fosters a spirit of trust and camaraderie that is mandatory for building a successful business. Great ideas can come from anywhere in the company, so openly and candidly discussing what’s going right and what’s going wrong can lead to new approaches, new solutions, and even major breakthroughs. My advice? Trust your people.

At Outcome Health, we hold these truths to be self-evident, that every person in the world should have access to the best health outcome possible, that they are endowed by their provider with better moments of care, that among these are information, intelligence and the activation of good.

At InContext Solutions, we hold these truths to be self-evident: no problem is unsolvable, no client need unfulfillable; great ideas hold great power; and change is constant, necessary and welcome.

  • Tracey Wiedmeyer, CTO & Co-Founder, InContext Solutions

As Hireologists, we hold these truths to be self-evident, that we succeed as a team, that we have fun at work, that we take ownership, that we deal honestly and upfront on everything, that we move fast, that we do great work, and that our core values dictate everything. That among these values are Pathological Optimism, No Assholes, Create Wow Moments, Eager to Improve, and Own the Result. We believe that our health and our families are more important than our jobs, that the boss is often wrong, that making mistakes is good, and that everything we do has a purpose. We set incredibly high expectations for ourselves, and we don’t ever break promises. And finally, we don’t care how everybody else does it, if you want to do it as they do it, go work for them. We do it better here.

  • Adam Robinson, CEO & Co-Founder, Hireology

At Eved, we hold these truths to be self-evident, that B2B payments and spend management in the events category should be easy, secure, compliant and convenient, and in creating this reality, we will be fun, savvy, and customer service focused.
