John Kampas, Founder & CEO of EMPIST LLC
Tell us a little about your background/work experience.
Straight out of college, I started working for the largest datacenter company in the world (at the time). I started as an engineer but in a short time, I became the Engagement Manager for one of the company's largest customers. I gained a lot of experience working with a lot of great people and helped me build the foundation of what EMPIST is today.
What is your degree in?
I have a degree in Management Information Systems (MIS) from Loyola University Chicago.
What are some major milestones and accomplishments you’re proud of?
· Starting EMPIST
· Transformation to managed services
· Early adopters of cloud
· Growth through acquisition
· International expansion
· Product Development
What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned as an entrepreneur?
I’ve learned that a solid foundation of good people is a core component of achieving great things. You must try new things, adapt and take risks but learn quickly and pivot when they don’t go as planned. No regrets, just lessons learned.
What do you love the most about working at EMPIST?
Working at EMPIST is my dream job. It's been so rewarding to watch this company grow, and I'm excited to continue to watch it expand in the years to come.
How do you keep your staff motivated?
Trusting my team to make the right decisions and take care of business. I believe people thrive when they feel they are trusted. Micromanaging is the worst thing you can do when trying to motivate a team.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Family first.” It’s easy to get caught up in the little things, but ultimately nothing is more important than family. I’ve tried to apply this mentality to running EMPIST, as well. We are one big family, and that’s priority number one.
What advice can you give others working in the IT industry?
Be innovative! The services you offer need to align with the high demands of the tech landscape today. As a Managed Service Provider, we’ve seen a significant focus shift to compliance, Document Management Systems (DMS), cloud storage, and cybersecurity for businesses. I believe several industries are primed and ready for a tech overhaul, and it’s exciting to be a part of that.
