Nicole Delmastro-Lesher, Sr. Director of Marketing, ClearObject
Chicagoan by birth or relocation?
Neither. Born in Wyoming, currently living in Indianapolis,IN but I’m traveling back and forth to Chicago regularly as we partner closely with Google Cloud and we have a large employee workforce working remotely from Chicago. I love coming to Chicago to connect with the team. I’m also a big fan of the Chicago restaurant scene, the Chicago Cubs, Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks, so it’s a quick trip for work and play!
Do you collaborate with any other Chicago tech companies and why?
Yes! We are a Google Cloud Platform business partner and we head to Chicago often as we work jointly on data analytics and machine learning projects for our shared customers. We’re also a member of ITA and MxD (formerly UILabs).
What other roles have you held in the industry? How did they lead you to where you are now?
I started my career as an Account Executive at a boutique advertising agency in Indianapolis called Burkhart Marketing. From there I was extremely lucky to land a job at ExactTarget as their Outbound Marketing Specialist, mostly answering a ton of RFPs and RFIs that came in after we placed favorably in the Forrester Wave reports and Gartner Magic Quadrants for top email marketing service providers. From there I was promoted to overseeing that team, and then became the Marketing Account Manager for the ExactTarget internal marketing department’s Creative Studio. ExactTarget was acquired by Salesforce in June of 2013, and shortly after that I made the leap over to CloudOne, now ClearObject, to oversee all of their marketing efforts.
How did you come to work with ClearObject?
A headhunter reached out to me at just the right time. He said he “had this quirky cloud start-up that was in need of a marketing leader who knows a little bit about everything, but is willing to do everything for everyone. They needed someone with scrap and grit, passion and energy to get things off the ground.
What is the coolest thing you’ve developed or project you’ve worked on?
There are so many cool things ClearObject has deployed, but one of the coolest as of late is an Automated Vision Aerial Intelligence Inspection solution that we created for a Fortune 500 global power company using Google Cloud tools like App engine, AutoML Vision, CloudSQL to name a few! We’ve helped that customer gain 10x more effective and efficient inspections in the field and over 55% of images have been eliminated from needing human review after the initial round of model training. It’s expected to improve to 90% as the machine learning model continues to learn and improve overtime. Mind Blown!
What do you like most about what you do?
What I love most about my role at ClearObject is the variety of work I get to do any given day. I love being able to create marketing programs, systems and frameworks. I love being able to build out teams. On the regular, I get to promote our customers’ success stories, design beautiful collateral, activate campaigns across numerous channels, research and analyze market trends, build prospect lists and work with the sales team on outreach, plan and execute marketing events and trade shows, and partner with Google and IBM for partner marketing campaigns, but most of all I love being able to strategize with our leadership team and test new way to communicating ClearObject’s story. We have such a talented group of engineers and developers here at ClearObject and the solutions that they build for our customers are uniquely theirs- so each story I get to tell is uniquely different!
What’s the best advice that you’ve ever received?
“A bad day doesn’t equal a bad life”-Trish Maher. Some days might be long, but life is short. In any job, you’re going to have good days and bad days. Some days are going to be easier than others. Some people are going to be easier to work with than others. It’s all about making sure the good days out number the bad ones and you are cognizant of how you manage your own energy and attitude. After all- that’s the only thing you truly have control over.
What is the hardest challenge that you’ve faced on your professional journey?
I’m actually in the throes of it right now! In March of 2020, my husband and I will welcome our first child, our daughter! Yay! But I can already tell that this is going to be one of the hardest challenges I’ve faced in my professional journey. Preparing for maternity leave has it’s own challenges, but figuring out how to balance motherhood and maintain my career at a growth stage company is going to be challenging. Up until now, ClearObject Marketing has been my baby. Come March, 2020, there will be someone new in this world that suddenly means more to me than anything else. Figuring out how to balance my time, focus, energy and passions will undoubtedly be challenging. Setting healthy boundaries and proper expectations with my family and my team will be important, but I’m confident in ClearObject as an employer that will be willing to work with me as I embark on this life journey!
Who has had the biggest influence on your career?
My husband, Joel Lesher. His rock-solid support is huge and he is the most conscientious partner I could ever ask for. He’s a sales executive at Salesforce Marketing Cloud and a baseball coach, so his athletic mindset, competitive nature and strong work ethic lends to him always encouraging me to try new things and motivates me to have a continued thirst for achievement.
